LAKEWOOD is a tutorial and educational institution that has been in existence since 1978.
We offer individual instruction for pre-K - 12. It is our goal to provide college preparatory assistance beginning with the earliest age. We use the Seton Home Study Program which is accredited through CITA and SACS. Students receive individual attention and are encouraged to work at their own pace. One of our key concerns is instilling an avid interest in reading. R.E.M . (Reading Education Matrix), written exclusively for Lakewood, is the curriculum we use for early and remedial reading. We also use Horizons, Math-U-See, Pimsleur, and Rosetta Stone. We are not a certified school with certified teachers and do not wish to be. You have only to look at the percentage of failure to see what public schools with certified teachers have produced over the past 40 years. We are a Drug-Free Zone, which includes the use of any prescription psychotropic drugs used so prevalently today for behavior control. We approach study from a Christian point of view. We are also a Label-Free Zone! No student who attends Lakewood is considered disordered. We reject subjective psycho-babble diagnostics, ie. ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia, Aspbergers, Autism, etc. Children who have had these nooses attached to them are considered LA, Learning Able! In other words, normal children. OPEN - Lakewood is a year-round, ½ day study center. We are open from 7:30 - 11:30 with studies beginning at 8:30 AM. We study approximately the same number of days as public school. We are closed during holidays, announced quarterly, and the month of August. Upon completion of studies, students are presented with a diloma that , along with ACT scores, is accepted at most (if not all) colleges and universities. Students may also apply for TOPS, but you must register with the state as a homeschooler one year before graduation. Since state requirements change frequently, always check the Department of Education website for current instructors. |
