Children grow self-control by being around self-controlled people, just as they learn to walk and talk by modeling mom and dad, sister and brother, and others. They grow in self-discipline from loving correction. They learn that they are in complete control of emotional outbursts. Parents lovingly teach that tantrums are not acceptable behavior and that they never achieve the intended results of "getting my way". Over-active behavior can also be soothed and controlled by diet. Just a few changes can achieve great results. It's hard, but good food choices instead of "junk food" combined, with consistent correction and good example are much safer for children than narcotics. First and foremost, there are some very serious side effects to prolonged or any use of these Schedule II narcotics. When teachers suggest a diagnosis and send you off to the family physician or recommend evaluation they may not realize that they are encouraging the practice of drug using. Children must learn to control their own behavior at some point in their lives. They need to be taught that pills don't solve every problem. We want to see and hear the "real" personality of each student; the happy, creative, excited, and fully active child.
